Balancing Family and Business: How Entrepreneurs Can Manage Both Without Sacrificing Either

Running a business while raising a family can sometimes feel like spinning multiple plates in the air. And as an entrepreneur and mom myself, I understand the challenges of balancing these two incredibly important areas of life. However, I’ve found that with the right strategies and mindset, it’s possible to manage both without compromising on either. Let me share a few action steps that have worked for me, along with some personal experiences that shaped how I approach family and business.

priorities

Prioritize What Matters Most

At the heart of it, balancing family and business means defining your priorities. Both your business and your family are important, but sometimes you’ll need to make tough decisions about where your attention is most needed.

One of the first lessons I had to learn was to prioritize what truly matters. Early on, I found myself trying to do it all—juggling my business, HM Accounting, while taking care of my son and managing our household. It was overwhelming at times. But as my business grew, so did my understanding of what needed my immediate attention.

I’ve learned that there are times when the business needs to come first—such as meeting deadlines or handling urgent client requests. And then there are moments when family has to take precedence, like attending my son's special milestones or simply enjoying a peaceful afternoon with him. By clearly defining my goals each week, I’ve been able to balance both roles better. Remember, being present in the moment matters more than the quantity of time spent.

Set clear goals for each area of your life. What are the most important tasks for your business today? And what family activities or milestones can’t be missed this week? By breaking things down, you can see where your attention is required and allocate time accordingly. Remember, being fully present in each moment counts more than simply being physically there.

Schedule Family Time Like Business Time

We all know how easy it is to get caught up in business tasks—answering emails, attending meetings, solving problems. Family time can sometimes feel like it gets pushed to the back burner. But just as you schedule time to meet with clients or handle business tasks, scheduling family time is equally crucial.

For example, you could block off Saturday mornings for family activities or set aside an hour each evening for uninterrupted family time. Treat these commitments like business meetings; don’t let anything come between them. This was a game-changer for me. As much as I love the flexibility of being an entrepreneur, I quickly realized that without a proper schedule, it was too easy for my workday to spill over into family time. Now, I make it a point to schedule family time just like I would with client meetings. For instance, Saturday mornings are reserved exclusively for family activities, and I set aside an hour or two each day where my son gets my undivided attention—no emails, no business calls.

I know firsthand how tempting it can be to just quickly check that email during family time, but those boundaries help me stay fully present with my loved ones. Trust me, scheduling and respecting those family times will allow you to enjoy the best of both worlds.Treat these commitments like business meetings; don’t let anything come between them.

Delegate and Automate

As much as we’d like to, we can’t do everything ourselves. Whether it's at home or in the business, delegating tasks is a key part of managing both effectively. At work, consider hiring help or outsourcing certain tasks.

At home, delegating could mean getting the family involved. Teach your kids how to help with simple household chores or meal planning, and if possible, hire help for certain tasks like cleaning or childcare when things get overwhelming.

Automate what you can. From business processes like invoicing to setting up recurring grocery deliveries, the more you can automate, the less you have to worry about.

I tried to wear all the hats, from managing finances and client relations to household chores. But as HM Accounting grew and my family expanded, it became clear that delegation was essential.

At work, I’ve brought on freelancers and subcontractors to handle specific tasks, which has lightened my load tremendously. This allows me to focus on my core strengths and on spending more quality time with my family. On the home front, I’ve had to ask for help too. For example, I don’t hesitate to ask my husband to help with my son when things get particularly busy, and I’ve learned to trust others with certain responsibilities, both at home and at work.

Automating tasks like invoicing and setting reminders for recurring business operations frees up more time for me to spend with my family. These systems do the heavy lifting, allowing me to focus on what truly matters.

Set Boundaries Between Work and Family

Working from home blurs the line between family and business. In the beginning, I often found myself working late into the night, answering emails or getting lost in tasks, even during times when I should have been spending quality moments with my family. It quickly became apparent that without clear boundaries, both areas were suffering.

Now, I have set work hours, and when I close my laptop, it stays closed until the next business day. Similarly, I let clients know that I’m not available after certain hours unless it’s an emergency. Having these boundaries has brought a sense of calm and focus, helping me switch off from business mode when it’s family time.

Create a workspace that’s free from family distractions and set designated working hours. Similarly, let your clients know your availability and stick to it. Family time is precious, and protecting it should be non-negotiable.

Self care

Practice Self-Care and Be Kind to Yourself

Taking care of yourself is often the last thing on an entrepreneur’s to-do list, but it’s essential. You can’t pour from an empty cup. Make time for activities that rejuvenate you—whether it’s exercising, reading, or simply taking a quiet moment with a cup of coffee.

Self-care isn't selfish; it helps you recharge so you can show up better for both your family and business.

At the end of the day, it’s important to remember that you won’t always get everything perfect, and that’s okay. I’ve had my share of stressful days where things didn’t go as planned, and that’s part of the journey. Learning to forgive myself for the inevitable missteps, and adjusting where needed, has been a key part of keeping the balance between family and business.
