Things You Should Never Throw Out (and How to Reuse Them)
With some experts predicting that the economic downturn brought on by the coronavirus pandemic could be as bad as the Great Depression, the “waste-not, want-not” mentality from that generation is coming back into play.
So, before you toss these items in the trash, have a look at all the brilliant ways you can repurpose them around your home.
To Use Around the House
Netted Produce Bags
The netted bag that holds oranges and other produce can be scrunched up to clean a really messy pot or two before you throw it away, you can use them to scrub your bathroom shower tiles and even put in a foam sponge and use it to scrub your body before you throw it away.
Rubber Bands from Takeaway Parcels
Those thick rubber bands that your takeaway boxes are great for closing bags of food.
Plastic Food Containers
The plastic tubs used for food like yogurt and ice cream can make great storage containers and even as pot plants.
Old Towels, T Shirts and Sheets
Everyone is cleaning out closets these days. Old towels, T-shirts and sheets with stains can’t be donated, so use them as dish towels or rags.
Empty Shoe Boxes
If you have the time and energy to reorganize, use empty shoe boxes create drawer organizers.
Muffin Tins
One of the extra muffin tins you never use that crowds your kitchen cabinet is perfect for organizing jewelry.
Glass Jars, Containers or Cans
Glass jars and old coffee canisters make great containers for bulk pantry items, desk organizers or bathroom containers. Cans can even be used for make-up brushes and stationery holders or paint brush holders.
To Take Care of Your Yard
Two Liter Bottles
An empty two-liter milk/cooldrink bottle can be converted into an easy, light watering can.
You can also make bird feeders out of them.
Broken Dishes
Collect broken china to re-tile outdoor tables, flowerpots, paths, or as a unique border for your garden. Plant small plants in old stained coffee mugs.
Fruit and Vegetable Scraps
Use it as compost for the garden.
Egg cartons and Egg Shells
Start seedlings by adding soil to each hole then planting seeds of your choice. Once they have sprouted, you can plant the whole egg carton if it is made of wood pulp or recycled paper as it will biodegrade when in the ground.
Egg shells are high in calcium so sprinkling them on the soil below plants will boost growth.
To Take Care of Yourself
Water Bottles
Fill empty water bottles with sand or rocks for hand weights.
Cucumbers
Cucumber slices soothe eyes that are strained from binge-watching series.
Used Tea Bags
Relieve puffy eyes by chilling the bags in the refrigerator then placing one over each eye or soothe insect bites and minor burns by chilling the bags in the refrigerator then placing them on bites or burns.
You could even take a much-needed relaxing bath by adding used tea bags to bath water for some free aromatherapy and skin smoothing effects.
