Ideas to Celebrate Mothers Day During the Lockdown

Mother Day is an annual reminder to cherish the relationship you have with your mom. Given this year’s unique circumstances, many of us are celebrating the holiday at home or even, away from the women — moms, grandmas, aunts, you name it — that we love most. For that reason, some Mother’s Day traditions like spa days and dinners feel next-to-impossible this May. But remember, Mother’s Day is not canceled; in fact, the sentiment behind the holiday is more meaningful than ever before.

With some creativity and preparation, you can give your mom the Mother’s Day she deserves — and, let us face it, needs — during lockdown. Below are some ideas that do not require you or your mom to leave the house, so you can continue to practice social distancing and stay safe.

Organize a Zoom Get Together with Your Siblings

The next-best thing to an in-person visit is a virtual visit via video chat. Find a time on May 10 when you and your siblings can all join in on a video call — whether it is on Zoom, FaceTime, WhatsApp or another platform.

Spend time catching up and enjoying each other’s company. Maybe you can all make plans for a real get together once it is safer to travel and congregate.

Take a Virtual Exercise Class Together

Now more than ever, you both need to tap into the joy that dancing brings. Take a virtual cardio dance class or go for something more zen like a yoga or pilates class.

Order a Meal for Delivery

Treat your mom to brunch or dinner, even when you cannot be together. Doors may be closed to the public, but takeaways can do business offering delivery.

Check if one of your mom’s favorite restaurants accepts delivery orders and purchase her favorite meal.

You could take it one step further and ‘eat together’ over a Zoom chat. It’ll feel like a treat – no cooking or dishwashing involved AND you’d be ‘virtually’ present.

Create a Slideshow or Video for Your Mom

The purpose of Mother’s Day is to share your love and appreciation for the woman you call Mom.

Compile photos of you and your mom over the years and create a slideshow or record a video of yourself talking about what makes your mom so special. Sharing those types of gifts will warm your mother’s heart — even from hundreds of miles away.

Drop Off Baked Goods

If you live close enough to your mother or grandmother, you could bake a batch of cookies, cupcakes or a casserole and drop it off at her doorstep.

Have the Grandkids do Something Special

If your kids cannot spend time with Grandma this year, have them send something that will make her smile.

Take a photo of the grand kids holding up signs that read “Happy Mother’s Day” or “We Love You.”

Buy a Gift Card

With many businesses around the country forced to close their doors, why not use Mother’s Day as a chance to not only express your appreciation to mom but to also support small businesses. Purchase a gift card at her favorite store that she can use once lockdown ends.

Check Places off your Bucket List (virtually)

Even if you cannot hop on a plane and sightsee, you and your mom can still bask in the world’s beauty with virtual tours of museums, gardens, mansions, and national parks.

Although these are only a handful of easy ways to celebrate your mom on this special day (no matter what your budget is or how far away you are from her), the most important thing to remember is that it’s truly the thought that counts.

What is the best advice your Mom has ever given you?
